Our commitment to sustainability
We are the original innovators of sustainable, engineered leather and have been offering a solution to a huge waste problem for over ten years. Thousands of tonnes of leather goes unused and is often destined for landfill. We transform that waste into materials with stand-out performance and significant environmental benefits. We have already saved thousands of tonnes of leather waste from landfill, reduced carbon emissions by over 250,000 tonnes and supplied millions of m2 of ELeather to blue-chip brands.
Our data is modelled using full Lifecycle Assessment in compliance with industry standards to give our customers reassurance and peace of mind.
Our sustainability pillars
To minimise our footprint and help brands achieve their environmental goals, we focus on three key areas.
Earth’s scarce resources
Up to 55% recycled content
No two leather hides are ever the same and it’s the inconsistency of the material that causes so much of it to be destined for landfill sites. We reduce that problem by continuously recycling tonnes of leather hides. Each roll of our material is made with up to 55% recycled leather and so far we’ve recycled enough of it to make more than 35 million pairs of shoes!
Over 60% lower CO2 emissions
Personally, or professionally - we’re all doing what we can to reduce our carbon footprint. Our factories have been designed from the ground up with sustainability in mind. The result is over 60% lower CO2 emissions comparing ELeather to traditional leather. Since production began, we’ve saved enough CO2 to offset powering 30,000 homes for a whole year.
Over 55% reduction in use of natural resources
There’s no doubt that nature’s resources are limited. Over-consumption is taking its toll on our planet. Our resource-efficient production saves 55% natural resources such as land and water. The water saving alone (by repurposing 95% of water used in the process) is enough to fill 18,000 Olympic size swimming pools.
Recycled claim standard
We have been certified to the Recycled Claim Standard from Textile Exchange for our product developments. The current certificate lists the exact material composition in our latest alternative leather material developments for consumer and lifestyle markets. We’ll continue to certify each new product in the future to provide complete transparency and reassurance to our customers. For a copy of the certificate (our scope certificate number is CU1048358), please contact ELeather team today.
ELeather Group has been awarded the Higg certificate by the Sustainable Apparel Coalition. The document certifies that ELeather uses the Higg Index to measure and grow its sustainability practice, recognising the company’s strive for continuous improvement in this area.
We make sure all raw materials we source meet stringent quality requirements. At present at least 70% of our recycled leather supply comes from sources that are either LWG (Leather Working Group) audited or working towards an award. All our suppliers are required to ensure material does not originate from the Amazonian Biome or other areas of high environmental concern.
